War Sand
As much as 4% of sand on Normandy’s beach is made up of miniscule fragments of steel, the remnants of shrapnel from WWII’s D-Day. It’s a story that’s part geologic wonder, and part reminder of what will be left of our civilization when we’re gone. More at BLDGBLOG.

Today I was introduced to the photographer Vivian Maier through Paul Hornschemeier’s tumblr. Her work is fascinating and I recommend poring through all her photos archived here.
Mr. Hornschemeier summarized her story well:
“If you haven’t stumbled across her photography, you can do so on this site, but I can’t encourage you enough to pick up the book as well. Vivian’s story (a nanny whose artwork was discovered posthumously, by accident, in a Chicago thrift store), her artistic anonymity, and the beautiful observations comprising this volume all make the book worth looking through over and over again. What marvelously concrete unknowns. Thank you, Ms. Maier. Thank you.” -  PAUL HORNSCHEMEIER

The Ornithorhynchus
This illustration makes me feel like I could train a platypus to beg for treats…they’d probably stab me with their venomous leg-spikes. Well, the males, at least.
